Lanka - My Thoughts, prima facie
Hi folks,
I've been noticing way too much content related to the war crimes in Sri Lanka on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and newspapers. Some of them have so much of bias that I've quit reading them half-way! I'm sure a lot of you must have seen such content as well! I've been able to derive an opinion on the scene and just casually thought I'd write about it.
The cause of an ethnic group fighting for a separate and distinct identity is not something new to the World. It has happened several times and all our history books talk pages of such noble struggles. At that level, I respect the cause of the Eezha-t-thamizh people.
The problem, in my opinion, was the approach. I've never respected the LTTE. Not once. In spite of all the footage of crimes meted out against Lankan Tamils. In spite of all those articles and radio shows. In spite of all that emotional lobbying. This is simply because I don't believe violence is a solution to the issue at all. Any sovereign nation would stand up against an extremist group operating within its borders. Attack after attack after attack, the only thing that became obvious was that neither side cared a shit about all those lives lost. Casualties became collateral damage. The net result, as we all know very well, was a bloodbath that lasted for more than 2 decades.
I was about 4 years old when Rajiv Gandhi was murdered. My family lived very close to Sriperumbudur at the time. I actually remember seeing him drive by my road on his way there. He didn't return at all. Every single time I heard of the incident in the subsequent weeks/months, the words "LTTE Terrorists" were prominently used. In hindsight, I concur. An extremist group that assassinated the former Prime Minister of a neighboring country can certainly be named a terrorist group.
When I was old enough to understand the issue, which was sometime around 2nd year college, the mention of a ceasefire between the LTTE and the Lankan Govt would trigger just one thought in my head. That they have finally learnt the hard way. But, unfortunately, that was never meant to be, at all. Attacks continued and more blood was shed.
War crimes were committed. Both sides have done crimes. If we discuss which side has done more war crimes, there might never be an end to the issue at all. That's the way school kids fight. Not leaders, diplomats and politicians. With respect to the motion by the US, it really doesn't make any difference now. Both sides were provoked by each other. Both reacted. Both were merciless. The bigger picture is now to rebuild the country. Sadly, what's left of the ethnic group has to get over all the dark memories from the past and rise to build a future that is prosperous enough for the next generation.
I haven't done extensive research on the topic to write this article. All of these opinions are derived from whatever information I have personally seen/read. If you think you can change my opinion, please try. I'd love to know why I'm wrong.
Yours Skeptically,
uleadin
